I'm Leaving California...

I made a post and I mentioned that I was moving to a new place, and by new place, I mean that I’m leaving California. I’m moving to a new place, a new home, a new state, and starting a new adventure. I was gonna make a long explanation video about that but maybe I’ll just make a YouTube video because then I can ramble but for this blog post I’ll try to be short and sweet.

How I'm feeling right now.

I'm having a lot of emotions leaving. I’m also going through a breakup, and I will say this is one of the most emotionally stable breakups I’ve been through in a long time. I’ll talk more about that in my YouTube video. But the catalyst to move was not the breakup and more about finances. California has been great to me, but it's always been a mental tug-of-war to justify how expensive it is to live here. After looking at one-bedroom apartments for $2,400-$2,800 the scales finally tipped for me. If I am going to walk the walk of all my finance talk and put my goals first - I know I need to make this change. Reducing the amount I'm spending on living will have a lasting impact on achieving my goals of real estate investing, wealth building, and improving my quality of life. So with no boyfriend, no physical job to report to, and nothing else holding me here - leaving makes the most rational sense even if it hurts my heart a little (ok, no lie it hurts a lot).

Even still, I wanted to write down some reasons why I am excited to move. One because writing has in many ways been a path to clarity for me and it is helpful to come back to something tangible as I process this loss and my move.

Some of the reasons may be quite obvious, some not so obvious, but here they are:

  1. I’m excited to be closer to my family. I moved out to the West Coast and it’s been several years now and it’s always been a giant pain to go home. It’s expensive, it’s time-consuming, and I often found myself juggling trips home with other things, mainly work. Previously, I found it hard to work from the East Coast while working on West Coast time, but I’m excited to not have that constraint now.

  2. I’m excited to be market time. Being on East Coast time means that I’ll be able to wake up, get my morning routine done, and then watch with the market is doing. As opposed to now where I already wake up at 7 AM and by that time the market has already been doing what it's done. Now, this will be way more conducive to one of the goals that I’m trying to reach which is options trading.

  3. I’m excited to explore a new place. I think as humans we get comfortable and somewhat complacent when we know a familiar place around us. It feels nice to be in a familiar place but I also think back to when I first moved to California and how motivated I was to make things happen as I explored this place on my own. Being in a new place challenged me to make friendships, get familiar with a new area, learn more about myself, and grow into the person that I am today which I think is 1 million times better than I would be if I had to stay stagnant where I was. I guess that brings me to the last point.

  4. I'm excited to grow and evolve into a new person. I saw an Instagram post the other day about how cities New York and LA are considered fast-paced cities and I would agree with that. Living in SoCal is very fast and everything happens very fast, People are always on the go. If you want to hang out with someone it’s not like "let me come over right now." It’s more like "Let me schedule within a week or two in advance to hang out with you." When in Michigan it was kinda like you just pop up and people are ready for whatever. I guess that is because there’s less to do, but I am looking forward to getting back to that. Even in my communications with people where I’m moving (No, I’m not moving back to Detroit), it’s just slower. People take their time, there's a reason for the term Southern hospitality. It’s really interesting. I'm looking forward to having a bit of that mentality grow into me by osmosis. It will help my time anxiety, decision paralysis, and commitment issues knowing there is all the time in the world.

So those are reasons that I am choosing to be excited and those are the reasons I’m trying to hold onto. Especially as I pack up everything I own to ship it across the country. I made a lot of friends here and if there’s one good thing that came out of the pandemic, it is that the physical presence of someone does not affect the bond that you can make with them. So I hope I can see people before I leave if not I'm just a FaceTime away.

Until the next update - Here's to the journey.
